I don’t know about you, but this warm again – cold again weather is certainly messing with the healthiness of our household! Our little girl has gotten the brunt of it with a yucky cold.
In my opinion, colds in little ones are particularly sad because there isn’t a whole lot they can take (or in our case, our daughter can smell medicine from a mile away no matter what we try to hide it in…) One of our favorite standbys is Vick’s vapor rub on her chest and the bottoms of her feet when she goes to bed. Another good trick is to sit in the bathroom with them while you run the shower full blast on hot. The steamy bathroom helps break up all that gunk in their chest and relieve some of the congestion.
For a good double whammy against colds, why not combine the Vick’s and the steamy bathroom with some DIY Vick’s shower pods?
(This probably goes without saying, but just to be clear, I am not a doctor. Just a mama with some go-to remedies for colds. Please make sure you check with your doctor if anyone in your family is under the weather.)
All you will need for these shower pods is
2 tsp Vick’s Vapor Rub
1 1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup corn starch
1/2 cup water
In a glass bowl, microwave the water until it’s hot but not boiling. It needs to be warm enough to melt the Vick’s. Once the Vick’s has melted into the water, mix in the baking soda and corn starch until it becomes a thick paste. If it is too thick or thin, add in small amounts of water or baking soda until you achieve the correct consistency. (It should be like a thick toothpaste.)
Line a muffin tin with papers, and spoon the mixture in. Allow the disks to harden around 12-18 hours. Once they are dry, remove them from the paper cups and store in an airtight container.
When you are ready to use them, toss one on the floor of the tub and run the shower to release the soothing vapors. And keep your fingers crossed that Spring is almost here and cold and flu season is almost over!!
